Do you know how pipeline stalls and flushes work in hardware?

This is one of my favourite interview questions for graduates. Almost all of them have worked on designing a pipelined processor and can comfortably talk about pipeline stalls and flushes. Things get interesting right at the moment I ask them to implement a flush or a stall in hardware.
